The classic round diamond

As one of the world’s most popular engagement ring styles, the classic round cut diamond is the epitome of timeless elegance and sophistication. The iconic design features a single, brilliant round cut diamond at the centre of a band offering exceptional sparkle and versatility. The round brilliant cut diamond shape has a total of 57 facets, 33 on the crown and 25 on the pavilion, which results in a breathtaking display of fire and brilliance.

Round diamond engagement rings can come with several secure prong settings that add to the overall aesthetic while still helping to maximise the gemstone’s exposure to light. Four prong settings, which see a single claw at each corner, are a popular choice while rare double claw settings like that seen on our Alice design add some depth and complexity to the simple aesthetic. Round diamonds also look stunning with pave-set bands where smaller diamonds are placed along the shoulders of the ring’s band.

The sparkly halo diamond

The halo diamond engagement ring is another popular style for today’s modern wearer, and it’s easy to see why. It combines the timeless beauty of a round cut diamond with the added allure of a surrounding halo of smaller diamonds. It takes the classic round cut diamond to a new level of brilliance and sparkle. The design is both modern and romantic, and for some, symbolises love and protection since it uses diamonds to encircle and protect each other.

Typically, halo engagement rings will have a round cut diamond at the centre, held in place by a prong centre, to ensure maximum light play within the stone. Surrounding it is a mesmerising halo of smaller diamonds meticulously set to accentuate and enhance the brilliance of the central stone. The arrangement of these smaller diamonds creates a mesmerising look that makes the central diamond appear larger and even more brilliant.

The modern princess

One of the most modern engagement ring styles is the princess cut diamond. Exuding a sense of contemporary elegance and allure, the princess cut diamond ring is characterised by its square shape with pointed corners. It’s a favourite amongst those seeking a balance between traditional and contemporary design with its sharp corners often symbolising the strength and resilience of a romantic relationship.

At the heart of a princess cut diamond engagement ring, all your attention is drawn to the sharp, pointed corners and square facets that create a unique, brilliant display of light. The clean lines and crisp angles of the princess cut diamond give it a distinct, modern look, setting it apart from the more traditional round or oval shapes. The diamond is typically secured in place using four prong settings, with some designs even pairing the square-shaped gemstone with additional halo decoration.

The talon claw oval diamond

Another popular twist on the traditional round diamond, the oval diamond engagement ring is characterised by its elongated oval-shaped gemstone. Some of the most popular oval cut diamond rings are left simple and stunning, placing just a single oval cut diamond at the centre of a precious metal band. These designs look particularly breathtaking with talon claw settings, a setting named for its bird claw-like prongs.

There are several reasons why talon claw oval diamond engagement rings have become incredibly popular. For starters, they are renowned for their brilliance and sparkle, much like the round cut diamond, but instead add an element of sophistication with its elongated silhouette. The shape also naturally elongates the finger for a flattering look. Oval engagement rings also pair beautifully with many wedding band styles, especially wishbone or V-shaped wedding rings.

The elongated pear diamond

Also fashionable for its elongated form, the pear cut diamond, also known as the teardrop cut, is a captivating and unique choice for modern wearers. It combines the brilliance of a round diamond with the graceful symmetry of a marquise cut. It is named as such for resembling the shape of the fruit or a teardrop, rounded at one end and pointed at the other. The latter in particular adds a touch of drama and elegance to the design and creates extra displays of radiance.

Pear cut diamond engagement rings typically feature a three or five prong setting with the pointed end sometimes with a V-shape prong to protect it from damage. No matter which prong setting you choose, it’ll ensure stability and still allow for maximum light exposure for the best sparkle and fire. Pear cut diamonds exude a sense of elegance and individuality, often attracting lovers of contemporary jewellery. Some also see the teardrop shape as a symbol of a couple’s emotional connection.

The royal trilogy diamond

Last but certainly not least, you have the timelessly trendy trilogy diamond engagement ring. Made popular in the modern-day by the likes of Meghan Markle and Jennifer Lopez, the trilogy setting is decorated with three diamonds. Typically, the central diamond is the biggest and is flanked by two smaller diamonds. The shapes of the diamonds can differ, sometimes being the same shape across the entire design or with the two side stones contrasting against the centre. Our Grace lab grown diamond engagement ring for example features a central oval diamond flanked by two pear cut diamonds.

The trilogy diamond engagement ring is arguably one of the most romantic engagement ring styles. The three stones are believed to represent the different phases of a couple’s relationship: the centre diamond represents the present, signifying the couple's love in the here and now, while the two diamonds flanking it symbolise the past and the future. The breathtaking design celebrates the journey that has brought a couple together and the commitment they are making to share a future. For this reason, they are a popular choice for those who desire a romantic and meaningful engagement ring.

So, there you have it, our run-down of the most popular engagement ring styles. From timeless classic round diamonds to the contemporary allure of halo diamonds to the symbolic richness of the trilogy diamond, we hope we’ve helped highlight the individuality of each cut and setting.

Frequently asked questions

Engagement Rings

  • White gold or platinum- which metal?

Choosing between white gold and platinum depends on your budget, personal style, and potentially allergies. White both metals are white, platinum has a more muted tone compared to the brighter colour of white gold.

White gold is generally less expensive than platinum depending on the purity of the gold. It is a softer metal and is mixed with other alloys. However it requires occasional maintenance in the form of rhodium plating approximately every 18 months to maintain its shine. White gold can also contain nickel, which is commonly used in its alloys. If you have a nickel allergy then we would recommend platinum, which is hypoallergenic.

Platinum is a more durable metal and is therefore less likely to scratch or lose its shine over time. It is a dense, heavy, and hard metal, meaning that it can be polished time and time again, and does not require any special maintenance.

  • What are the most popular engagement ring designs?

    Here's our Top 5 designs for 2023

    1. Oval talon claw rounded plain shank - beware of the bow tie effect with ovals - choose a reputable diamond specialist to make sure they choose the best cut stone for your budget.
    2. Classic 6 claw round solitaire - a timeless classic
    3. 4 claw solitaire - a more modern take on the 5 claw classic but still timeless
    4. Halo - This design works well in all diamond shapes plus surrounding the central diamond with lots of smaller diamonds also gives the illusion of a larger diamond if you want more bling.
    5. Trilogy - a traditional 3 stone ring has all the same shaped diamonds but a more modern take on this is to flanked the centre stone with fancy shapes such as pears, half moons, trapezoids, epaulette or baguettes etc
